RESIDENT ALIEN

60,000 unaccompanied kids from Central America entered the U.S in 2014, 80% more than last year. They were in fleeing unprecedented violence, mostly from drug cartels using them as foot soldiers. There are more in New York than in any other state save Texas, many awaiting court rulings that could send them back home.

Carlos was born in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, a city with the highest homicide rate in the world outside a war zone. At the age of 15, Carlos saw his best friend shot dead in front of him. As a witness, he would have to join the gang responsible or be murdered. Faced with this horrific choice Carlos made the difficult and dangerous decision to head north. Accompanied by thousands of other refugees from gang violence, Carlos rode atop the infamous freight train, La Bestia, endured constant muggings, and crossed deserts.
52,000 were caught trying to cross the U.S border, not Carlos.
